AUGUSTA  your new world bistro, was inspired by the owners’ grandmother and great-grandmother, Marie Hackenberger. Marie, who was known affectionately by her family and friends as Augusta, was a classically trained French cook, who after marriage and children, continued to cook for her family as if she were cooking for  restaurant patrons—only with a family comfort food flair.
    Family legend has it that whatever the time, day or night, whatever the financial circumstances, whatever the meager foodstuffs in the pantry, when family  or friends dropped in, Augusta cooked something amazing for everyone to enjoy.

Whenever possible at Café Augusta we offer hormone-, antibiotic- and additive-free foods; promote sustainable agriculture; use environmentally-friendly products; and support local farmers and businesses.

Augusta passed on her love of cooking and food to her daughter, Anneliese, and to her granddaughter, Micheline, and great granddaughter, Mijanou.  

   Micheline and Mijanou, in the great tradition of family cooks everywhere, share with you, at CAFÉ AUGUSTA, their passion for their family comfort
foods and other comfort foods from all over the world.  At CAFÉ AUGUSTA you can enjoy the whole world of cuisine without leaving town.

Micheline, born in Germany, grew up eating German food, with an international flair, and dreamed of sharing her love of food with many others outside her family and circle of friends.  After over 30 years practicing law, Micheline is now creating recipes and cooking at Café Augusta, with her daughter, Mijanou Cackler.  

Micheline’s culinary training at the Johnson County Community College and Institute for Culinary Education in New York have enhanced her 50 plus years of cooking for friends and family to bring you the very best in homemade local and ethnic comfort food.

Mijanou, a Kansas native, learned cooking at a very young  age and has been expanding her culinary repertory over the past 15 years to include comfort foods from Africa, South America and Asia.  Mijanou is balancing her creative work at Cafe Augusta with running after two children, Akeza and Giovanna.

Mijanou’s training at the Johnson County Community College and the Institute for Culinary Education in New York have added to the skills already practiced by Mijanou for years while working in the catering and restaurant business.  Now she is creating and cooking her recipes at Café Augusta for you to savor.

Mike Valent

Mike, a native of Pittsburgh, PA, ,  has worked in the restaurant business ever since he graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in finance.  His restaurant experience has taken him from Kentucky to Hawaii (where even after 4 years, he did not learn to surf)  and now to Kansas, where he is the General Manager at Cafe Augusta.  A gregarious and creative Leo (one of many in the Cafe Augusta kitchen), Mike brings his skill, experience, and love of food and life to work every day.  Mike loves the color blue, long walks on the beach, sunny vacation spots, hiking (he was previously a hike leader for the LLS Hike for Discovery program), and, on occasion, breakdancing  and skydiving.  Mike is single, but that could change. . . with all the interesting people he meets daily at Cafe Augusta. The rest of us at Cafe Augusta are delighted he is with us.
